Stanley is a red 10-12-D 4-6-0 pannier narrow gauge tank engine.

Biography[]

Stanley was built in 1917 by Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States of America for the War Department Light Railway to serve in the trenches. He was one of 495 locomotives in the class to be built. When he arrived, he was not in a serviceable condition so he had to be fixed in a workshop which took over a month, where he received his first firing and as soon as he was ready he set to work delivering supplies to local towns. Occasionally, he had to venture out onto the front lines, which he always hated because he saw destroyed homes and buildings. He and Sir Topham Hatt worked together in the War.

After the war, he had worked on an unknown railway until 1938 when his manager got rid of him because of his apparent jinx.

Stanley arrived on Sodor and worked at the Mid-Sodor Railway as its dedicated heavy goods engine. His arrival coincided with several unlucky incidents happening, particularly an accident at the Cas-ny-Hawin Slate Quarry which put both Stuart and the quarry out of action. The day Stuart's replacement funnel arrived, which turned out to be a drain pipe. Toby had heard this and brought a lamp from the Skarloey Railway that brings good luck wherever it goes. After Stanley heard the lamp's story, and when a fully staffed fire train just so happened to be nearby when a fire broke out, Stanley was convinced of the Lucky Lamp's effects and had no more problems. When the Fat Controller visited Sodor on one of his inspections later in 1938, he met up with Stanley again, and he told his stories to the other Engines.

Unfortunately for Stanley and his friends, the Mid Sodor Railway experienced great hardship after the Peel Godred Branch Line opened and only managed to stay in service up to a little over a year afterwards. Almost immediately after the Mid Sodor Railway was finally forced to shut down, the now-former MSR engines were all sold to the Skarloey Railway, including Stanley.

In Diplomacy, which takes place in 1959, Stanley revealed the prejudice he held against the German people due to what he saw during World War 1. At first, he was confident he had done nothing wrong, but that confidence disappeared after he found out about Sir Handel Brown.
