Gordon Reeves is the North Western Railway (formerly the Nor' Easter's) number 4 engine. He usually pulls the express from Knapford to Barrow In-Furness.

Biography[]

Gordon was built at Doncaster in 1922 as an experimental prototype for Sir Nigel Gresley's A1 Pacific design for the Great Northern Railway known as the Gresley A0. In 1923, the LNER took control of the Elsbridge and Knapford Railway on the Island of Sodor and Gordon was brought in to run express services between Knapford and Barrow In-Furness. When he first arrived on Sodor, he was courteous and eager to get to work. He immediately garnered a reputation for his reliability. After receiving praise from many passengers, he became another arrogant express engine.

By 1938, Gordon had become good friends with the Midis' mixed-traffic engine, Lily. This led to Adam and Diesel teasing her, saying she was in a relationship with him. However, no romantic feelings developed between them as Lily ultimately entered a relationship with Douglas, instead of Gordon. Following the murder of Lily's guard by Dominick's ghost, Gordon came to the smaller engine's side, allowing Lily to vent her emotions to him, then providing emotional support and comfort to her. When Lily stated she might not be able to control her anger around the spectre, Gordon was able to cheer her up, joking that he would have to try and keep Dominick safe from her.

Persona[]

Gordon's important position as the engine who pulls the Express has made him proud, pompous, and self-important, with a good reason too; he is the fastest engine on Sodor. He is extremely proud of this and is inclined to boast. He is goodhearted, always willing to forgive, and uses his superior strength to help smaller engines out of trouble.

In later years, Gordon's behaviour largely matured. He became less arrogant and boastful, becoming more respectful to the needs of other engines. He also began shunting his own coaches, no longer believing the task was beneath him. Gordon also began showing more compassion and sympathy for other engines, showing concern when Whiff arrived late in Modernisation, and sympathizing with Edward, Thomas and Toby over the Loop's closure, knowing how much the line meant to the three engines and their history with it. He also took offence to Sheffield's nasty behaviour and insults towards James, standing up for his friend in his absence.

Gordon also doesn't like to be reminded of or compared to his original personality. An example of this was his reaction when the Railway Series was published by Reverend Awdry. The books largely portrayed Gordon's prior behaviour. As a result, Gordon took offence to the Reverend's portrayal of him, believing it to be character defamation as he was made out to be a bully towards Edward. He was further upset by the fact the books didn't portray his change of heart or maturity in later years.

In the Sodor Shorts, Gordon is shown to have a deep revulsion against the French, and a fear of spiders.

Livery[]

Gordon is painted in sky blue livery with red and yellow, the number 4 is painted on his tender in yellow.

Basis[]

LNER Class A1 and A3

Gordon is an LNER A0 and the only one of his kind but he was rebuilt in 1924 into a LNER A3.

Trivia[]

  • In The Stories of Sodor episodes based on episodes from TUGS, Gordon takes the role of Top Hat, with the exception of Munitions, where the role is instead given to Francis.
  • Gordon's full name is Gordon Reeves, which is a likely nod to Canadian actor Keanu Reeves.
  • In Sodor Shorts, Gordon had converted to Islam at some point, as he mentioned in Propaganda. Further evidence of this is shown in Obese (where he mentions Allah) and Police (where he tried to commit a terrorist attack on Knapford Station).
